CITY OF COLD LAKE RELEASE:
The transformation of the City’s Lakeshore Drive continues as construction enters its next phase.
The contract for Phase 1B was awarded to Knelsen Sand and Gravel earlier this year at a price of about $12.7 million. Work is expected to begin this summer with important infrastructure being the main focus. Water and sewer lines will be replaced, as well as the paving of Lakeshore Drive from 7 Avenue to 10 Street.
Phase 1A, which began in the fall of 2023, involved the installation of sheet piles, which will act as a retaining wall and water break to eliminate the erosion of land beneath Lakeshore Drive. This portion of the project is expected to be completed early this summer.
“Work on Lakeshore Drive has been moving at a great pace. It’s getting very exciting as we move closer to the project’s completion,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “Residents who have been waiting years to see this stretch of road upgraded are even more excited. I know they will be very impressed with the final product, as will the rest of the City.”
The Lakeshore Drive Infrastructure Improvement Project was first initiated back in 2019 as a means to upgrade utilities, road surfaces and slope along the lakeside. The improvements also aimed to create a picturesque corridor between Kinosoo Beach and the Cold Lake Marina. The construction on Lakeshore Drive has been continuous, starting last fall, through the winter months as crews worked through cold temperatures to complete installation of the sheet pile wall.
Most of the Phase 1B work is expected to be completed this year, with work on the landscaping the linear parkway scheduled to be completed in the 2025 construction season.
